Oof. This one hit me. My oldest brother is estranged and it's so hard. I'm reminded about it at least once a day—thinking about the 2.5 year old niece I've never met, the pain in causes my parents, the confusion me and my other brother face, as we try to figure out where it all went wrong. Heartbreak is the best way to describe it. It's so unfair. But, to your point, there is a silver lining...this situation has brought me and my parents and other brother closer. We're more open now, we talk about real shit, and our bond has strengthened because of it. I wouldn't wish this level of heartbreak on any parent, though. Now, everyone go call your mom and tell her you love her!
