Aaaah, a Florida girl! I see why escape was mandatory for you.
I came to (north) FL in my 20s because of how I loved the springs and rivers.
It was the Bicentennial year and it was pretty epic. I arrived with my mechanic tools, Golden Retriever, ancient Triumph motorcycle, raggedy old Econoline van, and $240 dollars.
I only moved away once, a mistake soon rectified.
You must laugh at all the "Florida man..." stories, because, as the old FL joke went,
"There's gotta be SOMETHING in the water that makes them do that."
It's sad now, but back then you could count the pebbles on the bottom of 15 feet of water and the spring basins were turquoise blue.
Now, almost all of it is algae green from giant dairies north of here.
At least we may have stopped the developers from jamming a superhighway through the last wild areas.
I'm smiling at all your enjoyment of distant and different places and remember the pure joy of first landing here on the ever so exotic "Redneck Riviera" after struggling in New England. Florida has been good, so many great friends, good food, and cheap enough living I only had to work 20 hours a week and could live like a king. That let me spend the rest of my time exploring where my curiosity might lead and just having fun.
Hi Meghan, I’ve popped you a LinkedIn update when you get time to read it! Rgds Fergus
